The upcoming electric vehicles

Since in 2009 Mitsubishi launched the i-MiEV (platform shared with the PSA group for the Peugeot Ion and Citroën C-Zero) and in 2010 appeared the Nissan Leaf (electric vehicle with the highest sales to date), several manufacturers have been incorporating full electric vehicles to their offer.

An important milestone for the impulse of full electric vehicles market was the launch to market of Tesla Model S. Its 400 km range, cutting-edge technology and astonishing performances (0-100 km/h in less than 4s. for the P85D) has shown that it is possible to manufacture an electric car with a remarkable range and excellent performance. Aside from the price being similar to other vehicles belonging to the same car segment with similar performances (Mercedes S Class 500 lowest price is around 90.000€ and Tesla is barely 60.000€)

Therefore, numerous options already exist in the market that completely cover daily car use of most of the drivers, and sometimes, it is possible as well, to cover long distances, for example in the case of Tesla.

The upcoming models

Tesla Model 3

It is a must to start talking about this model, especially because of the media impact caused after its presentation the last 31st March 2016 Tesla has achieved an incredible milestone in automotive history: they have more pre-orders (around 400,000) than actual vehicles on the street.

Tesla Model 3

The most relevant features announced about this vehicle are as follows:

  • Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 6 seconds
  • Approximately 350 km range
  • Possibility of charging the batteries up to the 80 % in 30 minutes using the Tesla supercharging network
  • Autopilot function included in all the vehicles
  • Double front and rear trunk
  • Base price of 35,000 USD
  • First units to be delivered in the beginning of 2017
  • Forecast of 500,000 units/year to be manufactured

So, what is the Tesla secret? Apart from offering a vehicle with incredible performances at a very competitive price, it is preceded by a model that, although it has not had many sales, has also been successful in its segment. This fact has given credibility to the brand, and as a consequence, a lot of potential customers that were previously not able to afford a Tesla Model S, have not hesitated for a moment to pre-order the new Model 3.

Chevrolet Bolt

This model was presented at CES 2016 in Las Vegas last January. Although it is not the same segment as Tesla Model 3, this car also stands out for offering very good performance at an affordable price.

Some of the features announced are:

  • Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds

The model for the European market will be the Opel e-Ampera.

A good response is expected of the market for this model, as the range of the vehicle is enough to cover most of the private car user needs, Besides, the fact that fast charging is included in the vehicle, it also allows to use the vehicle for long trips.

Reaction of the rest of manufacturers

So far the rest of manufacturers have gradually been introducing plug-in hybrid and electric models in their bid, although this is still limited. These vehicles have performances enough to cover daily use of most of the users, with the added value that the cost per kilometre is much lower, and are cars more respectful of the environment.

Nevertheless, it is expected that, with the irruption in the market of these new models, the main manufactures will have to be a step ahead to develop electric vehicles with a range bigger than 300 km, as well as a competitive price, in order to attract more potential customers.

The Wallbox Proposal

Wallbox is born from the focus of boosting the deployment of sustainable transport through offering innovative, attractive and fully compatible charging systems with any car or facility, as well as being easy to use.

Our chargers make the most out of both the vehicle and the house grid, in order to optimize the charging process, and making it easy and attractive. Likewise, our charges are already prepared to charge at maximum speed to support the vehicles that will be launched on the market in the future, making the most out of them.

The irruption of new models in the electric car market, is good news for everyone, as it implies an impulse for all the industry to develop new solutions to promote the establishment of the electric car as a mainstream mean of transport.
